Full Submersible Vertical Axis Tidal/River/Canal Drag Turbine - Concept Demo in Action. Full Submersible Uni-Directional free flow water turbine in Bi-directional Flow.
A very important feature of free flow river/canal (sea & tidal currents as well) power is that at present there are still considerable uncertainties to be resolved over assessment of how much power can be realistically extracted at a given site. Our team working at every scale from a single device, through farms of multiple devices, to understand and optimize turbine performance and ultimate energy yield from a given free flow stream.
We have demonstrated that the power that can be extracted by a free flow JET turbine is significantly higher than the "Betz limit" which restricts the total extractable power for an unconfined turbine such as a wind turbine. The Betz analysis is widely applied to the free flow water streams, but it underestimates the power.
Localized interactions between devices are of great importance in determining the collective energy yield of a system of turbines (hydro-kinetic parks), as wake effects can significantly reduce total energy yield. We are developing vortex wake modeling techniques to simulate and investigate turbine interaction effects. The results show that the turbine efficiency is affecting on both speeds crossing turbine flow speed and around turbine flow water speed. patent pending
