This video is part of a series of videos on the topic of producing firewood to heat your fireplace or complete home. The series of videos covers the tools you will need, how to cut tree trunks, how to cut trees into rounds, how to split the rounds with a maul or axe into logs, and how to stack the wood logs for drying in towers or stacks.

This particular video focuses on how to cut trees into rounds with a chain saw. Imagine you have a big pile of trees that you want to convert into firewood. First you cut the trees with a chainsaw into rounds. On the bottom of the tree pile I created a little structure that helps me in cutting. The structure is made from a single tree, cut into rounds smaller than than the final rounds required for your fireplace. In my case my smallest fireplace takes logs up to 35cm. So, I need to cut my rounds to 35cm. For the structure I cut some 8 rounds, each some 30cm long. Then I split these shorter 30cm rounds into 2 even halves. I put these semi-cylinders in pairs in a line on the ground next to the tree pile. Each pair is separated by a gap of 5cm. Once the structure is done, I roll a tree down from the pile. I place it on top of my structure. Now I no longer have to measure or mark the tree with chalk as I know I have to cut the tree exactly in the middle of the gaps of the structure. The distance from the middle of one gap to the next is 35cm, just the length desired. The tree to be cut placed on the structure is elevated making it easier for me to cut it. The blade of the chain saw remains safely away from the soil as I cut completely through the tree. In summary, using this very simple structure saves me time (no marking, no measuring) and increases safety (no damaging the chain saw). Have a look and try it yourself. The structure takes only about 1 hour to make and it will last for the whole pile of trees.
