Two years ago, hope for saving Seneca County's iconic 1884 courthouse seemed all but lost.
Frustrated with county commissioners' unwillingness to work with them, six county residents decided to fight the board's decision to demolish the landmark by suing the county. Two of the plaintiffs ran for commissioner in the March primary, and one, Democrat Jackie Fletcher, is on the Nov. 4 ballot.
They have spent time, money, and energy, endured criticism, promoted an ill-fated bond issue for the courthouse that voters defeated in March, and carried on anyway. Now, it looks like their efforts were not in vain.
The courthouse is still standing. Plans are being developed for an innovative way to finance renovation of the building, and organizations such as the Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. are working with the Tiffin Historic Trust and the previously sleepy local port authority on development proposals for other downtown structures — not just the courthouse.
