The Varnam is the centre piece of the Bharatanatyam repertoire, showcasing both the versatility and the maturity & depth of a dancer. It combines nritta, the pure dance aspect of the style with intricate rhythmic patterns, bhava, the interpretative or emotive aspect and complex musical patterns. The Varnam is always the dancer's plea to a deity, full of love and longing and a quest to be one with the Supreme. This Varnam is that of the 21st century devotee, a young man torn by varied distractions and directions, in an alien land amongst strangers, yet trying to fulfil his devotion to the dance.
