  • @zealberg: thanks for your reply but this was so long ago. Indeed I was privy to the TI chipset bit. MOTU simply makes crap when compared to RME -the company I chose instead- not only was MOTU customer support awful but their tech support was non-existent! REALLY. Good luck!

  • all settings were explored. the 896HD is simply not a piece of pro gear.

  • hey man

i had problems with motu gear that had me tearing my hair out

after two years i sorted it

the problem: if you use motu firewire equipment you should check that your firewire card has a 'texas instruments' chip

if you are using a non- texas instruments firewirecard you will have problems with motu

when u look at the firewire card you will see the chip, it has a map of texas on it which is the TI logo

you can purchase a TI firewire card off amazon

    hope this helps

  • Did you set your clock right? Are you recording 44.1 or 48?

  • I had my 896 fail after warmup and the failure appeared as an error message from the driver, stating the the MOTU device had become unplugged or powered off. I got a replacement unit that did the same thing after a 2 hour warmup and on a different PC. I know both units were malfunctioning because even standalone, they would not self-test. Am waiting for a 3rd replacement unit now.

  • no, the PC checked out completely by an expert; RAM, included. i suspected as much too, but that was not it.

FYI: MOTU's tech support during Jan-July 2009 was non-existent, meaning not accessible at all by phone during business hours (ALWAYS -no lie- busy) and their customer support was awful, so I replaced this with an RME unit which is way better.

  • Usualy that's a cpu problem no? RAM and CPu peaking... At least in my PCI... mounted on an old PC... I dont know anything more used to get this kind of flipping when the PC was overloaded. Cant realy moniotr /record at the same time at 10ms latency...

  • There is probably nothing wrong with the unit.

What are your buffers set like?

What firewire chipset are you using?

What driver version are you using?
