Lo scopo della "Canale", che quest' anno ritorna a Malta e nelle acque circostanti, è di promuovere la cooperazione, la sicurezza e la stabilità nel Mediterraneo, rafforzando la cooperazione tra i Paesi aderenti all'Iniziativa "5 + 5". Le attività previste saranno focalizzate sulle operazioni di sorveglianza e controllo dei traffici mercantili per il contrasto di attività illecite criminali (MLE -- Maritime Law Enforcement) nonché di Ricerca e Soccorso marittimo (SAR -- Search and Rescue operations).
Si tratta della 17esima edizione dell'esercitazione che, quest'anno, è stata pianificata e coordinata dalle Forze Armate maltesi, con la partecipazione di unità navali e mezzi aerei della Marina e dell'Aeronautica italiana ed il coinvolgimento di altri Paesi mediterranei. Algeria, Francia, Libia, Mauritania, Marocco, Portogallo, Spagna e Tunisia partecipano con unità aeree, navali e personale con incarichi di staff.
L'esercitazione si svolge nelle acque maltesi ed è organizzata in diverse fasi per addestrare i partecipanti alle differenti attività. In prevalenza, l'addestramento riguarda aspetti e compiti attinenti alla "sicurezza" piuttosto che quelli più tradizionali di conflitto in mare, con uno scenario predisposto per migliorare la cooperazione e le capacità operative delle forze aero-navali partecipanti.

CANALE 2010, is the 17th edition of the bilateral Italo-Maltese aero-naval exercise, which has returned to Maltese waters and airspace this year, and was conducted between Friday 11th June and Friday 18th June, 2010.
The aim of CANALE 2010 is to promote co-operation and peace in the Mediterranean Region, with particular emphasis on strengthening the cooperation between the "5+5 Initiative" partners in the Mediterranean area. Exercise activities will focus on Maritime Search-and- Rescue (SAR) and Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE) combined operations.
This year's Ex Canale has been planned, organized and coordinated by the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), and has involved naval and air units from other Mediterranean countries. Algeria, France, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia, as participating nations of the "5 + 5 Process", who have been invited to participate in order to be integrated in all the exercise phases and its operational levels.
