It truly is a Dire Straits song. When they came to record the song, the band bet Knopfler £50,000 that he couldn't sing "Private Dancer" in the style of a female R&B singer. Needless to say, they were absolutely gobsmacked at the end of it and paid up without hesitation. Like his fans always say, there's nothing that Mark Knopfler cannot do... :-)
