Online Chatting - internet fraud laws on dating web sights

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Expert: Vena McGrath - 4/27/2009

Question
I went out with a man for about one year. His profile said he was a widow. He referred to her as his dead wife. Told me his daughters didn't like him dating 2 years after his wifes death. So I never met his daughters. He played the lonely widower with awesome ease. My guess is he is a pathological liar. I went to his house, he had been sick for a week, hes not home and his wife of 33 years answered the door. He never showed any regrets, or sorrow for his behavior to me. When I threatened to expose him, he said he would have me arrested for stalking.
Is there any avenue I could pursue, legally as a violation of Internet fraud? He has since signed off the dating web sights. I saved copies of his profile and several personal emails. This idiot left me with a lot of incriminating evidence that he claimed to be a widow.

Answer
Hi Sharon

Your story is not unlike one of my own that I told in my book I had published. Amazing how these people can live double lives without ever showing their true selves. However, I am sure that you, like me, had plenty of moments when you questioned his honesty. I made contact with the wife by phone; I always had his home phone number and his address. How crazy is that? It's like they are playing a game of russian roulette and I will never really fathom whether they want to get caught or they just think they can do what they like when they like with whom they like.

I believe that in your country there are laws regarding fraud of the kind that you experienced. You should do some research online and find a contact to discuss your options with. I know that there are very distinct laws in place in the USA for fraud online in dating sites where men and women were posing as single when they were really married. I believe there are heavy fines and gaol terms for those found guilty.

If you have tangible evidence of this man in your life and you can therefore prove it, go ahead and see what you can find out. But be prepared for the comeback from him; it won't be nice and he will play very dirty. Trust me as I've been there. But at the end of the day the truth hopefully wins through and I wish you all the best. Get legal advice though and be prepared for the long haul as these issues aren't solved in too much of a hurry.

Good luck.

  • so how do you report these people in the U.S . the anti-scammer

  • @hookuspookus529

Hello it all depends on the type of scam, if romance scam involving money on a fraud situation then you can report this to the police or the FBI, but you need to have all the information together...

Some scammers claim they live in the US but infact they are living in another country or they have other people involved in the scam, this is possable.

If you need more help contact me in a private message.
