For the first time in four years, it's time for another video on TrickStyle, the little-known futuristic hoverboard racer for Dreamcast.

As far as how the game actually plays, there's the first 17 races, and then there's the final race. It's so much different from the rest that you'll think you're playing an entirely different game.
-Rather than taking on 5 rubberband opponents, this is a 1-on-1 with the guide who follows a largely fixed path. Yes you also get 1-on-1s in the USA and Japan boss races, but the latter is hardly even worthy of the title "boss race" (it's unlocked after 4, while the others are unlocked after their 5s), and this is a numbered race we're dealing with.
-The other races start you with only part of the time limit, with mid-race checkpoints forcing the pace throughout the race. This last one gives you the whole 2:30 from the get-go. It doesn't really make much of a difference, but presumably it's there to fit the setting of the season's final race.
-And, most relevantly, the void below the track. In the other races, you'd practically have to make a conscious effort to throw yourself over the walls in order to get a fall out, but this final race will have none of that. Every turn (and even a few straightaways!) risk a plunge into the...well, nothingness below Aerial Tokyo. Yeah, the game takes license with its story like that. In any case, you're tested on a lot in this race that never even comes up before it, and just completing the race will take a lot of trial and error. Hence the final race being in a league of its own, compared to the rest of the game.

With that in mind, here's a race to the Skydrome in about 1:53, 21 seconds faster than the guide's path that you have to beat. Early on, by skipping the loop, I manage to confuse the position counter so that it thinks I'm always in 2nd place and always right by the loop, at least until the very end. Oh well, it's not like I needed that to know what my position is.

  • Great game! How are you constantly getting the globe effect?

  • Enter "travolta" in the cheat menu and you can use an unlimited number of specials without having to collect globes.

  • i want this game so much i've got the CD but its crashed...can you send me it?

  • What, just give you my game disc? Why the hell would I do something like that?

  • Damn...sonic runs faster than this...

  • It's actually pretty close to a wash. I ran some numbers for SA2 that seem to indicate Sonic's standard running speed is a fairly tame 75mph, or 120kph. Of course spindashing can be faster than that, particularly if it's downhill, but then again so can the Katana Board or speed pads be faster than basic throttling.
