A diatomic molecule is like an 02 or an h2 molecule. The elements would be oxygen or hydrogen themselves. You can have a single hydrogen atom, and it would be an example of a pure element. If you add another hydrogen, they will most likely make an h2, a diatomic molecule. But this is still a pure element, because there are no others present. You could have an HC which would be a diatomic element but not a pure element. Diatomic literally means two atoms. Hope this helps.
