The biggest problem with this was time, because the Trophy Dash was after all the Heat Races and just before intermission and our Main Event is the first thing up after intermission. We had maybe 30 minutes to get this part replaced. We got to work immediately and fortunately we had all the parts we needed to get it fixed, well most of the parts. We had to had to find some spacers and an axle nut which required a lot of actual running around the pits to see who would help. It was pretty intense and we were all exhausted from running but we got it changed out with only 5 minutes to spare before we went out on the track. On one of my running trips to Bob's pit area I was able to glance at the starting lineup for the race, I would start 3rd if I could start at all. On my last run Bob let me borrow the Quad which was a big help while being a little awkward seeing as how it has been years since I had ridden one. Well with that obstacle overcome it was time for the Main Event.
I started 3rd which was a great place to start except for the fact that I had to start behind the 11 who just does not get going on the starts. He led us down to the green pretty slow and he led the inside line way down on the track where it was still wet. We went green, one he didn't go very fast, two we both got pretty sideways because it was we, and three when I was getting a run to go on the inside of him he moved back down and blocked me. He didn't know I was going there but I had to check up and that caused the 22 to hit me from behind and it killed all my momentum. Going in to turn 1 I was still stuck behind him as the outside line just freight trained us. I dropped from 3rd to about 11th in one lap. I finally got in line and followed the 29 around on the outside. He is really good on the outside so I thought it would be a good chance to learn something. We started making some ground up and passing cars back but then we caught up to the 5 who is really hard to get around. The 29 made a really gutsy move and gets clear of him while I am still catching up to them. I was actually make some really good time on the outside and catching back up to the lead pack. I finally caught the 5 and made a cross under pass coming out of turn 4 with only inches to spare. We went side by side in to turn one and he had me pinned down on the slow side. I couldn't get a run out of the corner and I was stuck in the loose stuff and nearly lost it coming out of turn 2. I lost about half a straight away on him and spend the next couple laps making it up. I tried to make another move on him and got blocked by his wild driving and nearly lost it again. Lost all that ground again. Gained it all back again. Then the caution came out for a spin on the back stretch. My only chance now would be to get him on the restart. It wasn't going to happen, I just couldn't find a clean and safe opening. It was pretty much a green, white, checkered finish and I finished 8th.
was an extremely frustrating race, from the poor start and track position to being stuck behind the 5 for the second race in a row. We also experienced just about everything you can in a single race night. We got a win, had mechanical issues, had a fast car but a disappointing race. You just can never know what is going to happen on any given race. I am going to have to continue to get better if I want to run up front in the Main Event and one of these days track position will work in my favor, maybe I will be able to put in another performance like that Heat win.
