10-minute sample pilot episode of "Volunteers," a show about VOLUNTEER firefighters, EMS personnel, Red Cross and other volunteer emergency responders: a breed all their own. Volunteers don't get paid to wait around the station waiting for an emergency call to happen; they usually come from home, from the dinner table, from the grocery store, sometimes from work; they drop whatever they're doing and haul off to the firehouse (or ambulance station), interrupting their lives and sacrificing their free time and risking their own lives to save others' lives and protect property, all for no pay. About 75% of America's area is protected by volunteer fire and EMS services. 100% of America is protected by Red Cross disaster response volunteers. #1 of a series in which I'll try to show all aspects of volunteering in the FD, not just the "glory" of putting out "the big one." Volunteers are unique. Few jobs ask you to drop what you're doing and immediately go to work; fewer of those involve risking your life, but NO OTHER JOB combines those factors with NOT GETTING PAID. We miss meals, lose sleep, time with our family, sometimes hours from our PAYING job and we do it 24 HOURS, 365 DAYS. Why? Because YOU NEED US! We need you, too! JOIN US!
