  • Check out the episode, "The Empath," from the original Star Trek series. Superb, diaphanous, Debussyesque orchestral scoring by George Duning.

  • @dwsingrs Thanks for your comment and for the info. I'll definitely check out that Trek episode.

  • Thanks for this posting... I borrowed the 78 from the lady nextdoor when I was a child (1960s)... even then it seemed to conjour up a different time (a different place was obvious, I grew up in London, UK). It's so special still... thanks!

  • @padraig38 Thanks for your comment. If you haven't heard it the whole album is quite good and brings back nostalgic thoughts of different times.

  • This is an unforgettable movie and music!

  • @EdGomide - I agree....a timeless piece

  • Opening bears a faint, or eve not so faint, resemblance to Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy." But this & BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE are Duning's masterpieces.

  • Thanks for posting this! It is a wonderful orchestral! As I recall, this is the actual title music to the film as I saw it when it first came out. The LP, of course, has all the incidental music. Wow! That was a great time in my life. There is an incidental piece that has to do with the household early on in the movie. That is also a motif from "Full of Life," a movie with another Duning score. :) Cheers!

  • THEME FROM "PICNIC" was originally released on a 45 rpm disc as DECCA Record No. 9-29888 (45L-9038). The piece was conducted by its composer, George Duning, with the Columbia Pictures Orchestra. The No. 1 hit flip side, MOONGLOW And THEME FROM "PICNIC" (45L-9039) was conducted by Morris Stoloff, who conducted the rest of the motion picture soundtrack, also with the Columbia Pictures Orchestra.

  • This particular cut was used as an Overture when the film was in limited release as a roadshow - it is contained on the original Pioneer laserdisc version of the film, but, sadly, was never included on any of the Columbia DVD releases. The MOONGLOW mix became one the iconic film cuts of the fifties.
