IGotShotgun's Race Master Ryan takes on the Baja 500 Tech Inspection and introduces us to the HUMMER fleet of racing vehicles, including the HUMMER H3, H3 Alpha and H2 SUT stock class trucks.
if GM were smart, they would've built their ad campaigns for Hummers around the racing pedigree. Its the last thing the average consumer or treehugger would expect from a huge monster like an H3. Hummers are badass! its a pitty GM pulled the line. That said, I wish they'd built the line around the H3 and HX and never done the H2. They should also have offered a 2-door H3.
that is a lot of changes on a car to be still considered stock i think. But I will read into the improvements Hummer has taken out of Baja. Unfortunately there are rumors that GM is considering throwing Hummer... either selling or canceling it fully is not known. Too bad.
Those hummers only have what's necessary to make them race, i.e. the interior is stripped and racing seats and a roll cage are put in, a fuel cell replaces the gas tank, the windows are taken out and new shocks are put in because the stock ones would overheat and fade after 440 miles of racing. These are in the stock class and are the exact same vehicles that you can buy at a Hummer dealer with the exception of the mods that I noted. And Hummer has made changes based on feedback from Baja.
Most companies will not change their production vehicles based on lessons learned in the Baja and any other race. Only companies that do is Subaru and Mitsubishi. As for companies like Hummer, does trucks are hardly what you see in the showroom. These care get huge overhauls for competitions like the Baja. If you really want a hardcore car from the get-go get the Icelandic Tomcat (a land rover with testosterone added for extra fun).
