Festival of Trees November 2010
for and by the children and youngsters of Abéné, Casamance, Senegal
The festival was organised by me for the EURAFRIKA foundation in the eco-cultural center 'Sabou Gnjima Kounda'
Some months before my arrival in Senegal I had called the leaders of the youth theater groups in Abéné and had asked them to prepare a performance around the question: 'What is the importance of trees for us'.
After my arrival in Abéné I found that each group had interpreted the theme differently:
the youngest two groups treated the different utilities of trees, the law against deforestation and the necessity to plant trees, while the eldest group had chosen to show the ambiance and festivity during and after the communal work of planting fruittrees.
Part 1 shows the groups Bantan Woroo and Mama Africa rehearsing and the first performances during the actual festival by the youngest theater group, La Nouvelle Génération and the percussionists of Din Din Bouloo.
Part 2 shows part of the performance of Mama Africa during the Festival of Trees.
Part 3 shows the performance of Bantan Woroo and the closure of the festival animated by the percussionists of Din Din Bouloo.
