In this first of three videos we are preparing a guitar to take an Earvana Retrofit Nut.
The existing nut has already been removed - see our video on nut removal for info on how we approach that.
Here we set about fitting the base unit of the Retrofit nut - the fitting of the top piece will be in part two.

Not many tools are required - in this video we use the following:
A radius gauge
A radius block with sticky backed sandpaper - although a file or block of wood with sandpaper would have worked too.
Some small files - predominantly a triangular 3 corner file - we've blunted the edges so that only the flat faces will cut .
Some scotch magic tape - but Sellotape or masking tape will work (do remember to reduce it's stickiness by applying it to back of a hand or onto a t shirt /pair of jeans first)
We also had some sandpaper on a flat piece of glass- so we could rub the base unit against it to get it to size and also keep it flat and even.

  • Damn good video mate, and I'm the first viewer, hooray!

  • @madgeniusmusic . Thankyou - I was hoping to make some really helpful videos that can be enjoyed by both players and techs alike. Congrats on being first!

  • @FelineGuitars Cheers, I'd love to be a luthier (went to Merton College to study it, you employed my classmate Jon for a while) But I don't have the hands for it, loads'a book knowledge, but no practicle skill.

I only live down the road from you too, Beckenham.

More vids like this one would be GREAT, can you start with part 2?

  • @madgeniusmusic . We keep loads of Earvana in stock - so feel free to pop in if you need one. We're working on part two as well as videos on the Shelf Nut system as well.

  • This video had me on edge thinking it was my Gibson Flying V. I only wish I could trust (and watch) a luthier do the work. Hopefully he would do as great of a job as you mate.
