The post I wrote on this (with a bit more info)
http://www.tofugu.com/2011/05/24/studying-japanese-with-subtitles/

This video is all about learning Japanese with Japanese subtitles. I'd mostly recommend this method to intermediate/advanced students of Japanese, though some beginners may get something out of it as well.

If you're a beginner of Japanese, though, I'd recommend checking out TextFugu

  • your wife is SO hot, and she has a little bit of a mustache too mmmmm

  • @pedsay not my wife, she's my client and I'm a private investigator who's been trying to find his lost son for years. I can't believe you haven't watched seasons 1-12 of my made up and non-existant j-dorama!

  • This is so useful!!! Thank you!

  • @MimiKi44 It's not a stupid question! :) I would say you can use kana with spaces for now, but it would be more efficient to use kanji for the words you know. I do this with anime a lot, and I only write down the kanji I know. Sometimes the speaking is more important. It depends on if you want to read japanese, or speak it, you know? But at least you can learn some vocabulary with kana.

  • what about with songs?

  • where do you find japanese media with japanese subs and english subs

  • DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN Ö_Ö

  • Um i have a question...mabye you will answer... so when you write down the japanese do u have to use kanji? im not at a very hugh level but i am capable of writing hiragana and katakana swiftly. would it be ok just to right the dialog as you hear it? or would it not work as well? lol kinda sounds like a stupid question but watevs :P

  • I just love how you can understand a language if you just go to the country and see what the heck there doing and saying. That's how I learned Russian. By countlessly looking stupid in front of my Grandparents not knowing what there saying until the end of the month. where I learned by instinct

  • Watch without subs....you will never learn if you watch with subs. Your listening will never improve if you depend on subs. You will just remember watching the whole thing in English instead.
