Very thorough video explaining outboard skeg replacement. T-H Marine manufacturers the aluminum replacement skegs for this type of repair. You can ask for them at your local dealer or order them from many online retailers. You can see the T-H Marine replacement skegs at thmarine.com - just search for "replacement skegs".
nice job on the repair !! how do you keep the skeg from pulling side to side (when welding )and breaking the weld ,also what rod are you using ?? thanks
A "skeg" is a projection of the keel for inboard drive systems, designed to protect the propeller(s) and support the rudder(s). What you're repairing here is just a "fin". Outboard systems do not have skegs, ever. Know the difference -- it may save your life one day.
I am afraid of putting on a stainless prop in shallow water... A good hit will (as I have seen) will take out the lower unit and I have seen the lower unit break off loosing all the guts into the water.
Nice vid I have sheet ally that i use for skeg repairs , not sure your customer would be so lucky with the stainless prop, he would most likely be replacing the gears also if he hit like that with a SS prop on.
