"Sway" is the English version of "¿Quién será?" composed by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz as a mambo in 1953. Norman Gimbel added the English lyrics and Dean Martin had the first hit with this in 1954. Since that time many recording artists took a turn with it including Bobby Rydell in a very popular version which went all the way to #14 on the charts during the Fall of 1960. By the way, the "Whoa, Whoa" gals that accompany Bobby on this and many of his other hit recordings were according to Bobby, grandmothers.

  • Oh, by the way, I had never heard them called the "Whoa, Whoa" girls before until Bobby called them that. I had to laugh when he said that.

  • interesting little tidbit there Jim..never knew they were grandmothers ??? sound a bit younger then "mamaws"...anyway..still a great tune after all these years....ty

  • @jekiwe Tell you a little story about that. I had an opportunity to converse with Bobby one day about this very topic, and he told me that. He said most people would never suspect it since they sound so young. The difficulty came when doing live concerts and without those "older gals", the sound could just not be quite duplicated.

  • The back up singers are great .They may be Grandmothers ,but they add a very sassy sound to the song.

  • Love that Philly sound.

  • Buble (whom I like) has nothing over Bobby! HA!

  • His back up singers were three African-American grandmothers. What a great sound!

  • About the same time Dean Martin did the same song. Always liked Dino but Bobby Rydell's version was a stronger version.
