FDR hated Hoover, never once called on him for advice and continued to use him as a political punching bag until FDR's death. Truman respected Hoover and appointed him to several commissions. After leaving office, Truman had financial problems. A bill was introduced allowing for a pension for former Presidents. Hoover didn't need it, he was a multimillionaire. But he publicly supported it on behalf of Truman, who DID need it.

Harry Trumans political rehabilitation of Herber Hoover was a great act of compassion and decency...though a totally partisan Democrat he was never afraid to cross political lines when neccessary to get what needed to be done....He would have been appalled at the way this country has divided itself into red and blue states and at the unwillingness of both parties to compromise to get things done
