Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin, performing what might very well be the most touching and magical moment in the history of musical theater.
Thank you, Stephen Sondheim.

  • my marching band's competitive show theme was on this. We watched the show as well. It was really moving. :]

  • @loveeaddict94

Mandy Patinkin has said, throughout all of his career as a musical theater performer, he had to try the hardest not to cry during this song.

  • Bernadette....pure beauty...looks, voice, acting, everything..

  • @Puppies140

    Amen!

I saw her as Desiree in ALNM two weeks ago -- What I wouldn't give to see her again in that role. She's still on top of her game at 62. Looking like she's not a day over 40.

  • God I wish I could've seen this live! One of the best scenes in broadway ever an it's just not as magical when it's a recording

  • Patinkin sounds like George M. Cohan. I don't care for it.

  • @DivaBehavior My parents actually saw this cast live in 1984, and told me it was absolutely amazing show. I have the show on DVD, but I agree that seeing it live would have been amazing!! ^_^

  • How many times do you think they've performed this song together? They're still brilliant at it.

  • I love this musical. These lyrics mean so much to me, but it kills me that they don't prod at my emotions the same way plenty of other, fairly thoughtlessly written musical theatre platitudes manage to. I find it hard to connect to this emotionally, even though it's still the best musical theatre there is. One day I hope I really can feel the beauty that I know I see.

  • To me, this is Sondheim's masterpiece. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. No other musical addresses the worth of the artist, the process, and the beauty of art as much as this show. Brilliantly through-composed not just for the sake of imitating opera, but each minute of music sets a mood. There are no cheap gimmicks here. No awkward pauses for pre-paid jokes by writers who don't care. No juke-box songs. THIS is what a musical should be. Full of heart, soul, and art.

  • 1 person just cannot move on.

  • Must not tear up...

  • @FozzyForman Oh my gosh, I thought the EXACT same thing. Both brilliantly moving moments.
