being a jazz comp major at berklee and trying to make my own non-genre specific sound, i'm wondering what your music sounded like when you were studying at eastman. my comp teacher rick dimuzio told me that your pieces would always be the ones that get the standing ovations and whatnot. its no surprise. but i have to to write a ten min. final piece and after transcribing a bunch of the quintet, i have found it so difficult to make a lot out of a little like you do. is there a secret to starting?

Oh, well I guess it was you who posted the clips, John. Imagine that.

Nobody, but *nobody*, composes like John Hollenbeck.
Big thanks to whoever posted these clips.

hard question....find something that you like-a small cell (rhythm, melody, harmony, poem, person, etc....) and then dissect it, manipulate it---coming up with
new material that is connected to the original...sticking to this concept (as opposed to arbitrarily putting material together) ..it is hard and takes discipline and high ethics but the results can be very "organic"...also taking into consideration WHO you are writing for ...hope that helps
