Great idea! The Pleiades is a great open cluster to view with binocs, just follow Orion's belt upwards in the night sky.
Check out Stellarium which is free software to simulate the sky and find objects.
Upgrading to a sub-$100 telescope from Walmart will open up viewing double-stars (there is a cool blue-orange combo int he northern cross) and the rings of Saturn (which are now almost edge on but will become more visible over the next 7 years).
