They never drop the retardants on the fire they just drop it in front of the fire so that it they stop the fire expansion to other areas...That's why.

Ever hear of RATO..(Rocket Assisted Takeoff) C-130's used them in Vietnam on short runways, that would be one hell of a climb out of a canyon, probably not feasible to spent the money on a retrofit, considering the billions lost during the LA fires, yes I said Billions, at least one...
