Jelly Roll Morton wrote this piece and named it for the Kansas City Bar where he played piano in Tijuana,Mexico. Tijuana sits directly to the south of San Diego, Calif. Jelly was drawn to the horse racing track that was in this area. "The Pearls" is another great piece that was written out of the Kansas City Bar.

this is same tune as "big fat ham "which is it?
ajdstrider 4 years ago
Kansas City Stomps and Big Fat Ham are completely different compositions. They do however share many elements of Morton's style in both form and musical figures.

Jelly would be tickled (instead of the piano) if he could hear this. Or can hear this. You're in touch with him all the way. But from a distance.

Yes indeed! Jelly plays a special role in my musical consciousness. I hear his approach to music loud and clear when I play his tunes. He was indeed a true, creative genius!
