This film is the first in a series short documentaries highlighting the historic markers of California. With over a thousand markers in California, one can explore and learn about the fascinating history of the golden state.
Spanish Landing, marker 891, is where Portola and Father Junipero Serra met, establishing the beginning of the Spanish occupation on of Alta California in 1769. Located in San Diego on its renowned harbor at Spanish Landing Park, this historical marker represents some of the early history of California.
San Diego was named as a rest stop for the Portola-Serra expedition on their way to Monterey Bay. Two thirds of the maritime expedition perished from scurvy while a significant portion of the land expedition deserted. The remaining portion of the expedition took a respite in San Diego, beginning the Spanish control of Alta California in 1769.
