A long time since I've heard this performance; I had an old LP. I love the tight electric energy Ancerl gives the work combined with exquisitely clean orchestral playing. Thanks cezig.

Leonard bernstein was a conductor who recorded this he was known as a fast conductor eugene ormandy was known as a conductor who took it slower .

i believe the tempo marking for the first movement is "Allegretto", MM half-note =69.

The first movement is being played at the exact speed janacek specified of 72 to the quarter. I think it captures the spirit of Janacek as well as any performance.

Of all the available recordings, this Supraphone/Abbey, (ultimately offered on the Parliament label), is absolutely the definitive rendering. And, cezig, you managed to maintain the quality of the sound splendidly. Do you have access to the astounding Rodzinski/London Phil recording of Shostakovitch's 5th, that Westminster offered when they introduced the XWN series? The sound is virtually the equivalent of Merc's Living Presence, and the performance leaves one breathless-..Great service, cezig

this recording is way too fast. The first movement is supposed to be a bit more lyrical, allowing the listener to get pay attention to the layers between the melodies and harmonies. because of its increased speed, listeners cannot get the full taste of what the composer intends us to do.
