The seagrass beds which the dugong depend on for food are threatened by eutrophication caused by agricultural and industrial runoff, and dugong waste matter is a major food source for other aquatic creatures. Due to their shallow water feeding habits, dugong are frequently injured or killed by collisions with motor vessels
Twenty years ago Hervey Bay Queensland AUSTRALIA,supported 1,200 square kilometres of seagrass and an estimated population of 2,000 Dugong. However numbers plummetted in 1992 to only about 166 dugong when river-bank erosion and major flooding causing silt to suffocate the seagrass beds. This single event demonstrated just how vulnerable this species is to extinctionThe danger of boats propellers is part of the problems, to many Dugongs got injured.., contamination and pollution is other real problem this species suffer,In addition, dugongs are threatened by storms, parasites, and their natural predators, sharks, killer whales, and crocodiles.
