Phil had a series of very bad incidents in his career. I think he had a tough time coping with the nerves of television just like most people would. He also got alot of bad breaks including the loss to Kent Wagner in 1987 when Wagner struck out to beat him by a pin.

I also remember him missing back-to-back single pin spares back in a 1995 arena telecast against Jess Stayrook in the title match.

yeah i remember that even it was the 1995 bud light championship match he missed a 4 pn and an 8 pin back to back after starting the match with a 5 bagger he went front 5 4 pin miss stone 8 miss bucket spare sheet shot 236

I remember this well when I was 12 and I cried the way he lost the match to McCune. But he did go on to win his first title three years later at the Bud Light Open.
