When Simon Huber immigrated to southern Indiana from Baden-Baden, Germany in 1843, he brought with him a wealth of knowledge about farming, fruit growing, and wine making along with a strong work ethic and love of family. Today, Hubers Orchard and Winery is Indianas largest estate bottled winery and has expanded from its original 80 acres to 550 acres with, among the many on-site attractions, a farm market, banquet facility for 1200, childrens farm park, ice cream shop, distillery, bakery, cheese shop, and café. Although the property and business have undergone many changes and diversifications since Simon Huber tended to his orchards, there is one thing that has never changed-- the personal commitment of the Huber family to provide quality products to its customers.
Huber Winery, whose first commercial wine was made from strawberries grown on the farm, offers a large selection of dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines; ports, and infusions. Products made at Hubers Starlight Distillery—the first distillery to be established in Indiana--include brandy and grappa. Currently managed by the 6th and 7th generations of Hubers, the winery is Indianas largest wine-grape producer with 65 acres of vineyards producing over 400,000 pounds of 18 varieties of grapes a year. In addition to the vineyards, the farm has orchards and gardens producing apples, a variety of berries, peaches, pumpkins, several varieties of squash, Christmas trees, and a wide assortment of seasonal produce. The Hubers considers themselves farmers first and still hand harvest the fruit used in their products.
The family credits their success in both the wine and agritourism businesses with patience, passion, and planning. Since 5th generation Carl and Gerald Huber opened the winery in 1978, their efforts to make both a quality product and provide visitors to the winery with an educational, family fun experience have been rewarded with over 900 gold, silver, and bronze awards from national competitions and a steady stream of nearly half a million visitors a year.
The Hubers entered the Indiana Artisan Program after hearing about it from the Indiana Department of Tourism and the Indiana Wine Grape Council. Theyre proud to be a part of the program which they believe highlights the art of the product among Indianas producers and elevates the importance of Iocally grown and made products in Indiana.
