This is how one goes about emptying waste from an ileostomy or colostomy pouch. Don't worry, it's just a demonstration!

  • Please forgive me: I gotta dumb general question: WHY would an ostomy bag smell WORSE than our anuses? They are both holes into our insides.

I ASSUME most of the smell from our insides is due to bile and juices produced from the liver and pancreas, right? I mean, there's no reason HCl should smell bad when mixed with food, right?

I admit: my knowledge of all this is PRETTY small.

  • @mphello Well, the ostomy cuts off the digestive tract prematurely, so that changes the smell. The stool is not fully digested, so foods with strong odors like eggs and onions actually smell worse. Additionally, an ostomy bag is emptied above the waist in front of your body, so the gases hit you much sooner than a fart, which sends the gas behind you and below the waist.

  • do you have to wear the bag forever? when can you go back to "normal'?

  • @KilluminatiCHE If you check out my other videos, particularly the ones with "J-pouch" in the title, you'll get my full story. I only had the ostomy for 6 months. Now I live with an internal pouch constructed from the end of my intestine.

  • what happens if your bag gets torn?

  • @KilluminatiCHE The bag itself shouldn't tear: even when it's full the stool isn't heavy enough to rip the bag. The barrier, though, that attaches to the skin gets worn out after a few days, or due to excessive exposure to water. Stool can leak underneath it then, so when it starts to get loose the appliance should be changed.

  • @UCVlog Wow! Thanks for the info. Guess there's no way for me to "test-drive" an ostomy, and then, if I don't like it, go back to my regular old digestive system.

  • @endthedisease Actually I have heard the other way around. Now that the JPouch is available, doctors are reluctant to agree to give someone a permanent ostomy even if they want one (like if they have chronic problems with the J-Pouch.) If you have UC and haven't needed surgery, just consider yourself one of the lucky ones. There are variations in severity in any disease, and not all treatments work for everyone. For some people, the meds don't work.

  • Thank you for the video. My mom is about to undergo this surgery. I wanted to be able to help her. I will show her the videos when she is ready.

  • @KilluminatiCHE The beg dosent get torn but mine wouldnt stay on. They even gave me a belt to keep it on. It wouldnt stick to my skin I was allergic to it. so if the bag falls off your looking at one big big mess or if the clip on the bottom of the beg falls off then thats really a big mess. I feel sorry for all the time my family had to clean it.

  • @endthedisease for some people its not very hard to live with but for others it is so severe that this surgery is the only way to save your life.

  • I have a friend that just had a colostomy and this was very helpful to me to share with her. Thank you so much for making this video! Hope all is well with you!

  • jesus dude..... im so sorry wtf happened to you. the thing we take for credit
