Over the past few years, a new type of backup utility that backs up entire PC systems using system images has become quite popular. These types of backups protect against a hardware crash, for example, if your hard drive completely fails, you can purchase a new drive and use the system image to restore the PC to its previous state.

  • One of your replies to a comment says you cant do a complete pc backup on 'home basic'. Does that mean if we have home basic and our hard drive fails, we need to buy vista again/get a new laptop? because we cant buy a new hard drive and upload home basic vista back onto it??

  • @gward135 No. If you have the original Windows disk, just replace the hard drive in your computer and re-install Windows. But you will have lost ALL of your information on the hard drive that failed.

  • Hey, my vista doesn't have "backup the entire computer" What do I do, please respond back! Thank you.

  • Thanks for your helpful videos man......

  • @LtFluffelz Hopefully your backup image is on a separte drive. Once you've re-installed Windows, just use the 'restore' function from the same menu.

  • ok so when the drive crashes, how to i restore it from there? would i boot on a blank drive from the disc (assuming i backed up to a dvd) or do i copy the image to a drive set as slave, or secondary?
