I can't believe that you have to take the chain off to clean it. Surely that will only weaken it. Even if it's a special link I would never split a chain unless I have to.

Removing the chain & cleaning in our industrial parts cleaner is the most effective way of completely cleaning grime & grit from the chain. Many chains now have split links or power links which can be removed and refitted an infinite amount of times w/ no alteration in chain strength. For chains which use a pin for joining we always refit a new premium quality pin. If the new pin has been correctly installed the chain should be as strong as when it was new at the join and really should not fail.
