When it burns (reacts with water), hydrogen gas - the explosion - and lye are formed... While lye would be nasty to get on you - thus the distance - the cloud to the best of knowledge is mostly show from the burning of the hydrogen. But, a far distance and a pretty wind free day helps keep and of the smoke away from the 'spectators'... You can only get it from chemical supply houses if you are an educational institution I believe....
