Most humans beyond suckling age find the thought of eating/drinking their own species' milk repugnant. Yet, humans of all ages think nothing of eating/drinking milk that comes from the breasts of a mother cow. Most mammals wean their young off milk at an appropriate age. Humans, however, are the only mammal on earth who not only drink/eat milk and milk products throughout their adult lifetimes, but drink/eat the milk of another mammal. The dairy industry does terrible things to cows to satisfy the human demand for cow mother's milk. First of all, keep in mind that all "dairy" cows are themselves eventually slaughtered. During their short lives as objects of milk production, adult "dairy" cows must be in a constant state of pregnancy in order for them to continue to lactate (produce milk). Thus the cows are repeatedly artificially inseminated, and repeatedly give birth to calves who are removed, if not immediately, within a day or two, from their mothers. This is as traumatic for the mothers as for the newborns. The babies are sold either to slaughter or to the veal industry. The veal industry keeps the calves in stalls so narrow that they cannot turn around. These babies are also kept in the dark and fed a nutritionally deficient diet. The lack of movement, light and proper nutrition creates anemia in the calves. This keeps their muscle tissue pink, the ideal for choice "veal" consumption by humans. Another use of baby cows, the ones sent to be slaughtered, is in the manufacture of cheese. Cheese is made by coagulating cow mothers' milk into curds which can then be processed and matured to produce a wide variety of cheeses. The agent used to coagulate milk is called rennet. The active ingredient of rennet is an enzyme called chymosin (also known as rennin). The usual source of this enzyme is the stomach of slaughtered newly-born calves. GO VEGAN! It's easy. It's delicious. It's good for the planet. And most importantly, it will stop the demand for the products that perpetuate this cruel enslavement, torture and death of billions of animals every year.
