This is the original version of "Ridin' The Storm Out" by REO Speedwagon. I haven't heard this version on the radio for more than twenty years. Judge for yourself if it is better than the live version (I think so).

I gotta say I like this version best because I like Mike Murphy's unique vocals. The live version is still very good. Even though I blame Cronin for neutering REO with all of the soft rock, ballad crap, he was a dynamic frontman and could belt out a tune.

You cannot take away the fact that this was REO second gen. and they were awesome! I remember talking to Gary waiting for Blue Oyster Cult to end their set. I asked him if he liked the new singer,Michael Bryan Murphy, and he said no. I asked him if he liked Blue Oyster Cult..he said no..I asked him why he chewed his fingernails...and he looked at me and handed me a beer. I was working backstage at the Terrace Ballroom in SLC back then. He was a good guy.

Are you kidding me? This version totally sucks compared to the live version sung by Kevin Cronin. The vocals are bland and lifeless. Thank God Kevin came back and saved this band from complete mediocrity. Too bad Gary Richrath ever left the band. Cronin/Richrath were a dynamic duo. The LIVE version of this song is the best song they ever made.

Based on a real story of a trip they took in Colorado.

The Red Rocks version is best, of course. grin
