Attention 12-year olds: yes, since light does not escape a black hole, you cannot see it. But you can see it warp light that passes by it, and you can see the (extremely bright) light emitted by infalling matter. Anything outside the event horizon is still fair game.
tl;dl black holes are usually pretty damn hard to miss.
