The linkage between genetics and schizophrenia has been recognized for a long time, through studies of families and twins. With the advent of modern genetic research, especially genome-wide research, there lies the hope of finding the genetic "fingerprints" of schizophrenia. However, so far that hope has been met by disappointment and frustration. Dr. Brad Pearce (Emory University) is taking a new tack. Here he summarizes a project that will use DiGeorge syndrome as an entry-point for identifying genes that, when they go haywire, are involved in schizophrenia.
