Audra's a great stage actress; no doubt about this. But I'm puzzled by the rapturous response here. This is opera, not musical theatre and while it may not be fair to say she's straining, she's barely getting there. I think Cynthia Clarey of the acclaimed Glyndebourne production gives the definitive performance; surpassing Price. She sings circles around Audra, annunciates just as well (a freq. comment here) and is even more emotionally connected. Search "My Man's Gone Now - Cynthia Clarey"
I think I just c***. don't know if I really avoided offense by censoring myself... but WOW. Did not expect that to come out of her.. I mean, I know she's good and trained classically and all.. but after a while, people usually lose it somewhat and can't really do classical anymore... wow.
Excellent ! I didn't know Audra until yesterday when I first saw this but now I am a big fan. I've watched 'gone now' more than ten times so far and I still get tricked by her emotion and song each time. She makes you believe that she is suffering unbearable sorrow. It seems she'll break down crying at the end. The intensity of her voice and expression pull you in. I love how she sings with great bitterness "...in the bed". She can't get away from "old man sorrow" even there.
