In 1969 I was 14 years old. As a Hispanic girl I had a terrible complex about my ethnicity and my tan skin. When this song hit the charts, my friends started singing it to me. It gave me a big self-esteem boost - I proudly made it through high school with my head up high. I love Derek - Thank you Johnny Cymbal, us brown skinned girls needed that. I was 10 years old when I first heard this song. I had the old Bang 45 for years until I finally got in on a CD (Dick Bartley's Rock 'n' Roll Oldies Vol 2), in mono. I was wondering...was this song ever available in stereo? I'd love to have it in stereo.

It is interesting to see the face of the singer after all these years. It's also evidence why some things, like rock and roll music, are best done by the young. I'm a Boomer who is getting tired of gray-haired revival acts instead of energetic, creative young musicians coming up with new material that knocks people's socks off. Thanks for the video, but I hope some young rockers are out there creating something besides rap music based on sampled hooks.
