A chance to see Tornado close up - the sight and sound when the locos respectively set off light engine for Alton and Alresford was awe inspiring. (an effect somewhat spoiled here by audio limiting circuitry) A subsequent run from Ropley to Alresford was what I expected with Tornado taking 6 coaches 'over the Alps' seemingly effortlessly but it has to be said that the return trip was not so propitious with Tornado running tender first and struggling somewhat before Medstead and Four Marks and with copious erratic eruptions of steam. She finally came to a stand just before Alresford. I heard various reasons for this bandied around from "the wrong type of coal" "late cancellation of an AWS signal" "a cow on the line" - who knows?
