He is a descendant of India's first education minister, and independence leader, Moulana (title of Muslim priest) Abul Kalam Azad. His relative, Najma Hepatullah, is a politician, once a member of the secular Congress party that lead India to independence, now a member of the right-wing extremist, Hindu fundamentalist, BJP.
