Viewing areas filled up two to three hours before the midnight event as about 250,000 party-goers secured the best vantage points.

A live DJ set from Radio 1's Nihal kept the crowds entertained before the pyrotechnics.

Big Ben famous chimes were followed by the launch from the London Eye of the UK's biggest annual fireworks display, set to a tailor-made soundtrack.

Member of the public had travelled from all parts of the UK and the world for the celebrations. Some 3,000 police officers were on duty in central London to ensure the event passed off safely.

The huge crowds were encouraged by the unseasonably warm weather, with the 59F (15C) temperatures predicted to be warmer than in Morocco and Madrid.
Around 80,000 people saw in 2012 in Edinburgh, at Scotland's biggest street party.
