  • That should be Vintage not Vinstage. Not sure what kind of half shafts. The engine was from Outfront Motors.

  • Specialty Auto Sports; Boulder Speedster; Vinstage Spyders/Speedsters;

  • Is the chasis vintage?

  • Yes. Greg built the car.

  • How long did your trans last?

  • Still running the same trans.

  • ;') I need this car in my life!

  • (continued): ....but at a far greater cost. Also, aluminum is almost impossible to repair if the car gets into an accident, and the insurance is naturally far more expensive. Aluminum is nice for originality, but fiberglass is far more practical. I chose practicality over originality, and am very happy that I did so. BTW, I owned an air-cooled Beck prior to buying the Vintage Suby. Air-cooled engines in 550s are often a pain to keep tuned; not so with the Suby.

  • As for the Vintage chassis, it approximates the original, but with improvements to make the chassis stiffer (a good thing) for better handling, and other tweaks to make for better street driving. The Subaru engine is cooled by a front radiator with electric fan for good cooling. The Suby engine boasts EFI, run by an onboard computer (no problems in the mountains) and more power than the average 2.0 bored-out VW engine. If you want "real," all-aluminum bodied cars are available.

  • The sound on this clip does not approximate that of a VW or Porsche engine, possibly because it employs a turbo. My suby-engined 550 sounds quite similar to that of a large VW engine, but then again, it is a 2.5 non-turboed engine instead of the 2.0. It doesn't have the "whine" that can be heard on this clip.

  • I just wanted to straigthen out some misconceptions about this car that some of you may have. This car is from a company called "Vintage" that produces Spyder and Speedster REPLICAS. They are awesome cars, but the chassis is not an original Porsche chassis, it is from a company called "Vintage", there is nothing about this car that is actually vintage from the '50's. Does that clear things up?

  • @orlandoautoexaminer I cant imagine it's a real chassis. The car looks to be in great shape and if it is a real chassis it would be worth serious $ with a real engine. A real 550 is all but impossible to obtain and some replicas are better drivers than originals. You would have to be an idiot to devalue an original when a replica would be a better driver ,especially with a modern engine, and cost a fraction as much.

  • Just to get this straight, this is a genuine 550 Spyder chassis? Not a replica?

    Even though some would call this blasphemous if it is, I think it's awesome to give a real 550 Spyder a new chance at life, with a modern engine to boot.
