I must visit these places, I have a home there but never acted the tourist, I must do next time I am in my beloved Alex.
It is very safe by western standards but keep away from demonstations, which are usually in the Sidi Gaber, between the station & corniche & also the Smouha Square area, when I was there last they were camping in Smouha square.
