My large fawn dobbie looked the same trying to swim. He wasn't afraid of the water (even though he attacked small waves and choked on the salt water) but he never got the hang of it.

My Doberman swims by slapping the water too. I've taken her to the river about ten times. She still can't pick up a proper dog paddle (tho she did it once for about ten feet). I think tossing a stick helps, because then pick up the dog paddle, because she gets so focused on the stick, she quits "worrying" about technique.

This is familiar. Our Dobe is all grace on land -- put him in the water, and he's completely vertical, flailing limbs, and sinks like a bag of rice.

AWW!
does she/he know how to swim?

@Cheapooo She is a friends dog. She doesn't really swim well. Dobes try to stand upright and use their tail and flailing arms to balance themselves. Guess it is seen in certain breeds. It was funny, but we wanted her to know where the steps were, so made her swim to them.
