I am a fundamentalist Christian. Nice presentation. You are right on about the founding fathers. Something that would add greatly to the discussion is what to do about sin. Sin is real, even if you don't beleive in religious dogma (as you said), people still do not live up to their own moral code. What does a humanist teach your kids about how to respond to that human failing in themselves and others.

It's not your job to counter-balance anything. It is your job to teach your children what you know to be true and offer your opinion about what you do not know for sure. That is the path of a true human being.

DUDE...You don't have to worry. By what you said the kid is already thinking for himself !
Just be honest. If you know you don't know, just share that. Stop worrying about indoctrination of the young. That is what you accusing your ex of doing. Your kid will make up his own mind in time. If you don't want to push him in any one direction...let it go.

I guess adolescence cures all religion if childhood doesn't retard them. keep them free until their a teen and lean back and soak up the Atheism/Agnosticism.

Thom, I'm lovin' the background.

you can be secular and regulious at the same time. Secular means you have respect for everyone to have reglion or no reglion in their lives.

I think comparative religion classes in schools is an excellent idea. I'm not religious at all but these organizations have played such a huge role in history students should have an idea of what they're about. Also, I think one of the best ways to get over your belief in religion is to read the Bible--the few really valuable passages are completely swamped by the crazy stuff.
That would be spelled MOOT, note mute.

This guy raises a very valid point. We have a christian mom and an agnostic dad. Mom gets to indoctrinate the children into her beliefs all she wants but dad doesn't. Why not? I think thom is right about comparative religion, perhaps the dad could teach them comparative religion himself, also pick up some books about science and read them with his kids. I remember as a kid I was completely fascinated by astronomy, and still am to this day
