Ground Handling: Horse Lunging Techniques, eXtension

This video briefly discusses how to properly lunge a horse. It is part of the Fundamental Training of a Horse video.

In this set of videos, basic ground work, longing and handling methods are demonstrated, as well as numerous suppling and basic training maneuvers are shown to develop quiet, broke horses.

My horse won't lunge at all. She just stands there and when I use the whip, she doesn't do anything. It's so frustrating and I would really like to understand why she won't move. I will start by leading and gradually lengthening the lead like you did here, but then when it gets long enough, she just stops. Any suggestions?

what if when u go to step out in front of horse he just avoids you n keeps moving away n wont stop till ya bring him right in to ya?

My horse was the EXACT same way. It got her moving after awhile.

@100mudrider Sice hes is so young, and it was his first try, he was probably just confused. Repetition will help. Praise him for every single thing he does right! Scratch his head, neck, and butt area, and tell him hes a good boy! After a while, he will understand that he gets treats and scratches when he does what he is supposed to do. Hope this helps!

Do you have any tips for a 3 year old 17 hand percheron thoroughbred who was never halter broke! He doesn't drag me with a chain and halter till I ask him to lunge, he doesn't run from the whip so I have to get big and loud....By then he has pulled the line and taken off! How can I hold him and get him to move away from me? He won't move!

My horse is very young, Hes a gelding and hes only 2, Hes never lunged before and i just tried today... Its not working well for him... He doesnt understand hes supposed to basically make circles around me, All he does is folow me. He doesnt like the whip either, but im afraid its the only thing that gets him to listen, Any advice?

Mellow? Ha have you met my horse? The whip doesn't even affect her takes me a while to get her started. But I just got her and I've never had a horse that didn't react to the whip at all.
