For Maori, the Declaration of Independence and the Maori version of the Treaty of Waitangi secured their sovereign power. For the British, the Declaration established the independence of the country under the protection of the British government. They viewed this as the most effective mode of making the country a dependency of the British Empire is everything but name alone. For the British, the English version of the Treaty secured sovereign powers in the Crown. In recent years, the Treaty has been described as the constitutional foundation of the country. But the debate over whether Maori ceded sovereignty to the Crown continues.
