House Republicans suffered an embarrassing setback Tuesday when they fell seven votes short of extending provisions of the Patriot Act, a vote that served as the first small uprising of the party's tea-party bloc.

The bill to reauthorize key parts of the counter-terrorism surveillance law, which expire at the end of the month, required a super-majority to pass under special rules reserved for non-controversial measures.

But it fell short of the required two-thirds after 26 Republicans bucked their leadership, eight of them freshman lawmakers elected in November's midterm elections. With most Democrats opposing the extension, the final tally was 277 members in favor of extension, and 148 opposed.

The Republicans who control the House made plans to bring the measure back for a quick vote later this month under normal rules, requiring only a simple majority for passage. They blamed House Democrats for the bill's downfall, noting that they provided the lion's share of votes against a bill that President Obama supports.

  • All the more reason to vote for the ONE republican who didn't vote for it -- who has been outspoken opposing the Patriot Act from the beginning: Ron Paul.

  • @TLydon007 I agree and that's why I support Ron Paul who has voted consistently against the Patriot Act and war!!

  • are republicans trying not to get elected LOL

  • @rgaud8

Believe me, you will get no argument from me on that one. I won't vote unless I know a person will strictly follow the Constitution and not parties. But many Independents are no better (Hello Mr. Lieberman) The key is either voting for people based on their voting record and who they are financed by. Obama actually had a ok voting record on some issues as a Senator but once that big billion dollar corporate money came in, he sure changed his positions on some key issues to say the least.

  • Vote 3rd party. The problem is with the Dems/GOP. They are both exactly the same, bought and paid for by the same corps. On the surface they bicker back and forth but that's just a game they play with the public. The Paul's are the only people I will vote for who belong to the two parties because they're not really in them. We need to end the dual dictatorship, plain and simple. The only reason I don't want Ron Paul Pres. is that I legitimately believe he'll be assassinated. Maybe I'm paranoid.

  • And that's exactly why I vow not to vote the two parties ever again, with the ONE exception of Ron Paul. When the GOP made it in 2001 or whatever the Dems opposed it and complained. Then when it's their turn they turn tail and do the same thing and put the same spin that the GOP did when they passed it. It's just a game they play with the public. They don't actually have any difference in beliefs. Vote 3rd party. This dual dictatorship simply needs to stop.

  • It's like the end of Star Wars when Dark Vador throws the Dark Lord Guy over the railing and he falls like thousands of feet to his death.....!

  • You can blame Republicans all you want but President Obama re-newed the Patriot Act. He could have veto'd this bill and he didnt. Obama owns the Patriot Act now and everyone who voted for him owns this bill as well. The Senate is controlled by the Democrats; they could have voted no right down party lines and this bill would have been gone. But they didnt and Obama didnt. This is Obama's bill now and you can't blame anyone but him if you do not like the Patriot Act
